Rob Roy Way Route

The Rob Roy Way is a wonderful long distance walking route through the spectacular Southern Highlands, linking the diverse scenery of the Trossachs with the beauty of Highland Perthshire.

This 79 mile walk passes through some fine Highland scenery, meandering through beautiful glens and following tracks alongside fast-flowing rivers and shimmering lochs. The track also climbs over several high passes which provide magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.

The Rob Roy Way walk begins in the picturesque village of Drymen on the outskirts of Glasgow, close to the shores of Loch Lomond.

The track passes by the lovely waters of Loch Venachar, Loch Lubnaig, Loch Earn and Loch Tay and, as the name suggests, follows in the footsteps of legendary Rob Roy MacGregor, the fearless Highland clansman and cattle reiver. It ends in the pretty Victorian spa town of Pitlochry, situated at the foot of Ben Vrackie.

Trail Details
>   Start / Finish: Drymen / Pitlochry
>   Distance: 79 miles (126 km)

Day 1:
Travel to the picturesque village of Drymen located close to the shores of Loch Lomond and spend the evening at your first nights’ accommodation.

Day 2: Drymen to Aberfoyle (10 miles / 16 km)
Leaving Drymen, the Rob Roy Way follows minor roads and forest tracks to the small town of Aberfoyle, the most southerly of the Trossachs villages. This is relatively easy walking on forest tracks and the peak of Ben Lomond can be seen far ahead.

Day 3: Aberfoyle to Callander (10 miles / 16 km)
From Aberfoyle the route continues on easy forest tracks through the Menteith Hills and descends to Loch Venachar before continuing on to Callander. This is the second largest town on the Rob Roy Way and you may wish to pay a visit to the Rob Roy Visitors Centre situated in the town centre.

Day 4: Callander to Strathyre
(9 miles / 14 km)
The Way continues its journey by the banks of the River Teith and gently climbs through the Pass of Leny to Loch Lubnaig and into the Highlands. The track follows the western shore of Loch Lubnaig to the small Highland village of Strathyre. This is an easy section shared with a cycle route following an old railway line.

Day 5: Strathyre to Killin (12 miles / 19 km)
A gradual climb from Strathyre provides excellent views across the valley to Ben Sheann, before a steeper descent into the village of Kingshouse. From here it is a 2 mile side trip to Balquidder - a must for anybody who wishes to see where Rob Roy lived and is buried. The route continues along the old railway line, climbing above the attractive village of Lochearnhead before entering Glen Ogle and descending into Killin.

Day 6: Killin to Ardtalnaig (12 miles / 19 km)
This is a splendid cross-country section which begins by climbing up into the mountains to the south of Loch Tay, a steady ascent to 575m and you should be rewarded with some fine views of the surrounding hills. Descend into the tiny village of Ardeonaig and follow a minor road for 3 miles along the south-side of Loch Tay.

As there is no accommodation in Ardtalnaig you will be collected and transferred back to Killin for a second overnight stay and returned to Ardtalnaig to continue your walk the next day.

Day 7: Ardtalnaig to Aberfeldy (15 miles / 24 km)
From Ardtalnaig the Way continues along the southern shores of Loch Tay past the small hamlet of Acharn, continuing along forest tracks before descending past the spectacular Falls of Moness and the Birks of Aberfeldy to the attractive little town of Aberfeldy. This is a more strenuous day but you should be rewarded with great views of Ben Lawers and Schiehallion.

Day 8: Aberfeldy to Pitlochry (11 miles / 18 km)
On the final leg of your Rob Roy Way walk, the Way crosses Wade's Bridge and heads downstream to the village of Strathtay. It is then an easy walk over hills and open moorland before you descend to Pitlochry, an attractive, bustling tourist town situated in a beautiful location on the River Tummel, surrounded by mountains.
